All Work And No Humour Can Make You A Dull Ass!

Yeah, it’s true. And I bet no one wants to be just a boring employee who is sitting on that old desk from years with loads n loads of work piling up on their head. We all need to add some spice to the workplace. Let me give you an example-

There are two people John and Don. John is brilliant at work. , but he is a bit introvert, he doesn’t talk to many people, doesn’t communicate or socialize and is always on his desk. On the other end is Don. He is always on his toes. He works as well as socializes well with his workmates, gives occasional compliments to the pretty lady next to his desk. And has a great sense of humour. Anyone who talks to him is out to laugh a lot. Who do they think will get the promotion first? It’s Don! Yes, John is brilliant at work but Don is an all-rounder. And who doesn’t like to get work done as well as a bit of good humour? Right?

A Little Good Sarcasm Won’t Do Any Harm

No one likes to go to work and I bet each one of us hate these things about going to work – Waking up. Working. Humans – Lots of Humans! We often assume we can’t joke and work at the same time. But that’s a myth. Everyone likes to be around a person who has a good sense of sarcasm and can make them laugh. We underestimate the power of gossiping about the boss at tea break, it can an awesome stress buster! A little bit of humour will actually help you to get along really well with your co-workers. Suppose you are stuck in a stressful situation, a bit of good humour won’t do any harm, but this would actually ease out the situation a bit and can make way for some new and fresh ideas. Plus you will be the star of the meeting! You see, this is an example of good work humour!

But Humour Can Go Wrong Too…

The problem with humour at work is that it can be ‘one man’s vodka and another’s poison’. Humour can be risky at times. And you need to spill out your words with caution because you absolutely don’t want your boss to be insulted right?  When jokes work, it’s great for our social status- however, when they flop, it can get ugly at times. You need to choose your words wisely at your workplace. Making inappropriate jokes at work would not be a wise thing to do and it will be better to keep them to yourself. Jokes should never be at the expense of others, and it’s best to leave sarcasm out of your personal stand-up routine. (Unless you know your colleagues extremely well, and are completely confident they won’t be offended.) What if you just said a joke in front of your boss, but unfortunately he got insulted and rewarded you with triple the workload! That would be a real turn off isn’t it?

No More Humour Then?

Of course, laughter is necessary for life. But, in a professional setting, you need to choose your words wisely. To those of you who have a funny bone have to control a bit. You need to understand the difference between having a good sense of humour and being the clown. And you definitely do not want to be the latter.

Right Amount Of Humour

You do not want to keep cracking jokes and eventually not be taken seriously. Sometimes when you try to be all funny it can be seen as you are not at all serious about your work. You will be seen as someone who wastes the time of others without being productive and if someone approaches you for work you will just beat around the bush and joke around and do nothing. Basically, this makes humour a proverbial two-edged sword – it can slice through the toughest of situations to your advantage, or cut sharply against you. It takes only one inappropriate joke to get fired (although the joke that causes the termination will probably be memorable).
